Episode 34: Exploring Apple Activity Application features and creative uses



In this episode, Alaskan Apple User Group members, Gary Miller and Jon Scudder will explore the many creative uses of the Activity Application for your AppleWatch and iPhone they have learned since the application’s roll out.  The experienced duo will start with the Activity Ring basics and then venture into more advanced topics such as how to use the application for tracking daily exercises, challenging friends and sharing exercise data.

Episode 33, Traveling with the Roaming Man G3 Hotspot; Apple makes airline travel easier



This week’s episode will look at the Roaming Man G3 Hotspot (www.roamingman.com) and how your Apple devices make airline travel easier during the summer travel season.  Travel applications recommended for itinerary input are TripIt and Kayak.  For seat preference, the Seat Alerts application is a quick way to get notified if a better seat becomes available.  Gate Guru will help you navigate around the airports with detailed maps.  Lastly, those on the ground can track your flight using Flightboard, Flight Tracker and Plane Finder.  All can be found in App Store.  Have an enjoyable summer travel season!

Episode 31, Apple introduces first 8-core MacBook Pro; third-party retailers discount previous models



In this episode, I’ll be discussing Apple’s introduction of the first 8-core MacBook Pro, what many were expecting to be announced at the World Wide Developers Conference, or WWDC, coming June 3. Also, the price reductions on older models have begun and will be continuing as the new MacBook Pro launch continues.  I’ll tell you how to stay abreast of these deals from third-party retailers using the MacHash News application.

Episode 30, Ultimate Weather Applications for the iPhone and AppleWatch



In the episode, I will talk about a few of my personal best apps from the numerous weather apps in the App Store.  It’s now summer and we just had our first storm of the season bringing hail, thunder and lightning. Severe storms are not only common in Alaska but around the world.   You just need to watch the evening news to see examples where people have been caught ill prepared.  I’ll talk about using your iPhone and AppleWatch to help make your weather forecasting more accurate and your outdoor activities safer.

Episode 29, Apple updates software, adds new Apple TV application



In this episode, Mac Minutes will tell you about the releases to iOS 12.3, macOS 10.14.5, watchOS 5.2.1 and tvOS 12.3.  These release mostly impact the Apple TV application which brings shows and movies from Apple TV Channels, iTunes and more than 150 Video Applications.

Episode 26, Using Apple technology in ‘Bush Alaska’ education programs



In this episode, we are going to depart from our standard Mac Minutes podcast program format and interview people who have interesting uses for Apple technology.  Our guest in this first episode of the series is Technology Director, Mr. Jim Dube, from Lake and Peninsula School District, in remote “Bush Alaska”.  He also provides technology support to the Bristol Bay School District, where he was a K-12 principal for several years.  Jim discusses the Apple devices he employs in the districts and the software he uses to manage the devices.  Additionally, he also gives his insight on the challenges of keeping networks and associated technology working far from commercial sources and technical support.
